"Auschwitz" with a record number of visitors for 2009
Blog, Monday, July 09, 2012 14:18:29A record 1.3 million people visited the former concentration camp "Auschwitz-Birkenau" in 2009, RIA Novosti reported. This is a record for 62 years since establishment of the museum "Auschwitz-Birkenau."
In 2008 the museum was visited by 1.1 million and in 2007 held 1.22 million visitors. During the 1940-1945 year, "Auschwitz-Birkenau" was the largest Nazi concentration camp. It was created by order of Himmler on April 27, 1940. Camp was divided into several zones and sectors. In August 1944 the number of prisoners was 100 000. the territory of "Auschwitz" were built four crematoria with gas chambers, and two temporary gas chambers.
