Austria's parliament passed a law which allows marriage between homosexuals. The law will enter into force on January 1, 2010. In his view, such couples will be allowed artificial insemination and adoption of children.
But the law provides for other rights of members of the pair, such as payment of "widow's" pension or allowance for divorce. According to Minister of Justice Claudia Bandion-Ortner adoption of the law is a historic step for Austria. Until now, official legal status to same-sex marriages are in the UK, Belgium, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and some states of USA and Canada.
