The Belgian government on Friday approved a plan whereby it will take a bike prison in the Netherlands, officials say. Under in early 2010, the prison in Tilburg will be empty of Dutch prisoners and their place will be sent 500 Belgian, who will be guarded by Belgian officers.
Measure is taken because the prisons are overcrowded and Belgium prison area they do not meet European standards. The annual rent for the prison in Tilburg will be 30 million. There will lie prisoners sentenced to long prison term, priority will be given to Dutchmen convicted in Belgium. Minister of Justice of Belgium Stefan de Klerk said that this is a temporary measure to which the authorities should resort until they are ready the new prisons. For this purpose he would even sign the agreement for that purpose with his Dutch counterpart. The agreement is part of a Dutch general agreement to move close to the Belgian prison system and must be approved by the parliaments of both countries.
